3 a.m. colic that ate my stethoscope

Had a barn call at 3 a.m. for “uncontrollable colic,” and the gelding greeted us by trying to eat my stethoscope while happily passing manure as I reached for the rectal sleeve. I keep the emergency kit stocked for a reason, but does anyone else see miracle recoveries the second you crack open the flunixin and start vitals?

I stopped losing bait to raccoon dishwashers by zip-tying a drained tuna can (holes poked) to the back of the trap and packing it with mini marshmallows soaked in sardine oil — hard to grab-and-dunk, easy to lick; if it’s pouring, I switch to peanut butter paste. @ACOTom, you seeing fewer sprung empties with fixed bait too?

I swear the ‘miracle recoveries’ start the second the Banamine bottle hits daylight. I loop the stethoscope through the halter cheekpiece so it’s not a snack, grab baseline HR/RR/MM/CRT (and stall-side lactate if I’ve got it) before flunixin, then recheck at 15–20 minutes to see if the pain stays gone. Do you see the HR creep back up on those instant cures once the walk stops?
