For routine canine OHEs (10–25 kg), we’ve been using a 5 mm LigaSure with a single transfixation backup using 2–0 PDS on the pedicles, aiming to reduce tissue handling and keep recovery smoother. Has anyone switched back to the three-clamp/hand-tie method — did you notice any real difference in OR time, hemorrhage control, or post-op discomfort, and do you prefer a specific jaw size for cats?
On 15–20 kg, LigaSure’s faster; obese/estrus pedicles still get a hand tie — “dry pedicle, double-seal”.
I’ve found that LigaSure really cuts down on my OR time, especially with smaller dogs — that said, I still reach for hand ties if I’m handling those tricky, friable pedicles — sometimes it just feels safer. Have you noticed any difference in recovery times lately?
